Nuclear medicine - PET

Examinations are carried out in the nuclear medicine - PET department in Building B. We are covered by sector 1 agreements and offer third-party payment. We do not advance the cost of mutual insurance (which amounts to €26.86 if you are not on ALD). You will be given a bill at the end of the examination for your reimbursement claims.

What is a PET scan?

PET or PETscan is a molecular imaging test that analyses organ function, metabolism and anatomy. The tracer used is FDG. This is a sugar derivative that can be consumed excessively by certain cells. FDG PET can therefore be used to assess inflammatory and infectious diseases and cancers, and to monitor their progress under treatment.

Procedure for the examination

Before the examination , you should observe the following instructions:

  • Do not eat or drink for 6 hours before the examination (you may drink only still water and take your usual medication).
  • If you are diabetic, you must inform us when you book your appointment (we will adapt the instructions accordingly).
  • Let us know if you are pregnant or likely to be pregnant

On the day of the examination, please bring with you

  • Your health insurance card
  • Your doctor's prescription
  • Your last medical letter
  • Your previous imaging tests

During the examination

Once the administrative formalities have been completed, a technician will take charge of you and make you comfortable. Your blood sugar level will be measured, and you will be given an infusion to administer the FDG. After the injection, you will have to rest in a cubicle for 1 hour, then lie on your back under a camera to acquire the images. You will have to remain still for 10-15 minutes.

After the examination

  • >You will be able to eat normally and resume your usual activities.
  • No eviction measures are recommended for those around you, including children and pregnant women.
  • The tracer used causes no side effects and there is no risk of allergy
  • Your examination will be interpreted independently by two doctors for optimum diagnostic safety
  • The results will be sent to your prescribing doctor within 24 hours.
